Security guard licence

Last checked against GOV.UK on 8 October 2026. Fees and rules change, so confirm the details on GOV.UK before you apply.

Security guards patrol or guard premises and property, and in the UK they need a security guarding licence from the SIA. Here is what you need to know.

The short version: you need the Level 2 Award for Working as a Security Officer in the Private Security Industry and a valid first aid qualification. The licence costs £204 and lasts 3 years.

What the licence covers

A security guarding licence covers guarding premises or property against damage, theft, unauthorised access or disorderly behaviour. It does not extend to using CCTV to prevent disorder or assault. You need a public space surveillance (CCTV) licence for that. The SIA updated its guidance on this on 29 January 2026, so check the current wording if your role involves CCTV.

Training you need

First-time applicants need the Level 2 Award for Working as a Security Officer in the Private Security Industry, gained within the last 3 years from an approved provider. In Scotland it is the Award for Security Officers in the Private Security Industry (Scotland) at SCQF Level 6.

You also need an Emergency First Aid at Work qualification (or equivalent) before the course, valid for at least another 12 months. BIIAB qualifications are not accepted on or after 11 August 2026.

Cost and how long it lasts

The licence fee is £204 and it lasts three years. Applying for a second licence on the same application costs £102. See the cost guide.

Renewing

You can apply 4 months before expiry. You need the Level 2 Award for Security Officers in the Private Security Industry (Refresher) and a first aid qualification valid for at least another 12 months. See the renewal guide.

Licence conditions

You must wear your licence where it can be seen while you work and show it if a police officer or SIA officer asks. Report convictions and charges to the SIA within 2 days if you can, and name or address changes within 7 days.
