Most people think of door supervisors and security guards, but the SIA issues other licences too. This guide covers key holding, cash and valuables in transit, non-front line and the Northern Ireland vehicle immobiliser licence.
The short version: key holding and non-front line licences need no training qualification. Cash and valuables in transit and vehicle immobiliser licences do. Each licence costs £204.
Key holding
You need a key holding licence for security work that involves keeping, or controlling access to, any key or device for operating a lock. No training qualification is needed. If your call-out work includes manned guarding, you also need the front line licence and qualification for that activity.
Cash and valuables in transit (CVIT)
This covers guarding property against damage or theft and transporting it in a vehicle designed for secure transportation. You need the Level 2 Award for Working as a Cash and Valuables in Transit Operative within the Private Security Industry.
Non-front line
This licence is for people who manage, supervise or employ individuals who carry out licensable activities, or who are company directors or partners in that position. No qualification is needed, and you should only apply for it if you will not personally work as a security operative. Every front line licence already allows the activities covered by a non-front line licence.
Vehicle immobilisation (Northern Ireland only)
This licence applies only in Northern Ireland. You need the Level 2 Award in Vehicle Immobilisation in the Private Security Industry. It lasts one year, not three, and is not eligible for the multi-licence discount.
Cost and renewal
Each licence costs £204. Extra licences on the same application are £102 (except vehicle immobiliser). The GOV.UK renewal page does not cover these licence types, so check the SIA's current renewal guidance. See the cost guide.
